Fans of vintage science fiction films can complete their collections with a two-disc DVD set featuring 'Rodan/War of The Gagantuas.' Included in the set are two full-length movies. The first is 'Rodan,' directed by Ishiro Hodan and released in 1956. The film is about a small village that is attacked by giant man-eating insects, as well as Rodan, a flying monster. The second film is 'War of The Gargantuas,' released in 1966 and directed by Ishiro Hodan. The movie is classic monster mayhem: a giant monster threatens to destroy Japan. Toho Gem
War of the Gargantuas is probably the best of the Japanese giant monster flicks. The creatures are like two super huge Bigfoots battling it out to the death. One of the too creatures is gentle and poignantly cares for even the evil creature. But when the green one (the evil one is green) eats people, the good creature (brown Gargantua) engages in a battle to the death with his emerald brother. Like King Kong, their is a lovely woman involved, but much more rationally, the big beasty isn't really interested in her so much as he is just trying to protect her and everyone else from his evil brother. This movie also has one more advantage which most other giant monster movies don't; the brown Gargantua is more identifiable with the audience because he is more humanoid, and the green Gargantua is more repulsive because when he eats humans. It is almost tantamount to cannibalism, since he is also humanoid himself. It is a very entertaining movie and I hope it gets a big budget remake some day.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New

The Words Get Stuck In My Throat
That song alone is reason enough to purchase this DVD. But overall, I love these old films and can't get enough of them. There is something about this genre that's both entertaining and oddly comforting. As simple as the effects are in these films, you can still tell a lot of thought was put into them. The stand alone Rodan movie is merely ok but War of the Gargantuas is truly one of the finest giant monster films ever made.
