Serves in 2 ways.
Another great Smiths product! The 'coarse' side works well for removing nicks and rough spots on the blade and also for establishing a new edge angle if desired. The 'fine' side puts a very usable sharp edge on the blade. On my hunting knives and Spyderco Para-Military EDC knife I do use an ultra fine stone and leather strop to get a more highly polished, long lasting edge. I find that using this sharpener after placing a small amount of soapy water does the best job of sharpening. All-in-all this is a great value sharpening tool which will meet the needs of most folks interested in home sharpening. Try it, you'll like it!

If you ever find one of these sharpeners for under $15 bucks, buy it. I've owned probably ten of these things. They will make scissors and knives razor sharp in a few seconds. Do NOT use oil on the sharpener. It can damage the diamonds. Use it dry and if you want, you can hit it with a super fine whetstone when you're done, but for most purposes, this will get your cutting tool extremely sharp. Expect this to last two to three years under normal use.

This one is the good version!
The yellow handle one never fits into the sharpener. I have several and they are all the same. The gray and black handle ones are the best. This one has a good interlocking with the 2 pieces and it's the one to get. I'm a butcher /meat cutter and I love this one the most for a quick edge.
