The Underdog of Marshall Heads
If you want an awesome amp then pick this up used for super cheap, and pair it with a nice speaker cab. I have mine going through a 2x12 with v30s and it sounds killer. If you like rock/metal (or anything with distortion) you will like this amp. The FX sound great imo, ignore cork sniffing pedal snobs. It also makes a great pedal platform because of how pristine the clean channel is. While pristine, gain wise the clean channel is very sterile, so it sounds a lot better with a mild OD or blues drive sort of pedal to give you a little grit and growl. The upside though is if you run this as a pedal platform, you will have crystal clear delays/reverbs. The OD1 w/ gain at 10 will get you a crunchy metal tone so long as you have high output pickups. I don't, so I use the OD2 with the gain at 5, and it still has more gain than OD1 w/ gain at 10. The crunch setting is basically the worst thing about this amp. First of all if you turn the gain all the way up, it will blow your ears out with headphones on with no way to adjust the volume lower. The issue with this is if you use the emulated line out to record/gig, it bypasses the master volume, and with the clean channel not having a volume knob the only way to adjust the volume is by cutting with all the EQ knobs (sounds like utter crap). The clean channel however has no grit at all, so the gain just adjusts volume and things go back to making sense again. The crunch channel can't even clean up with gain at 0 when light picking while volume is rolled off. Overall though it's a great amp. It sounds awesome, and it ALWAYS SOUNDS THE SAME (none of that shitty tube reaction to insufficient current). Of course it's loud enough to gig with, I rarely turn it past 1 lmao. Also a tip to troll your engineer, is if you use the line out while gigging, you can turn the master up without affecting the volume of the signal to their board.
