SynopsisFrom the Epilogue: As if impeachment were not enough, I also found myself confronting the daunting challenge of fighting an incumbent President determined to prevent publication of a book about my White House experiences. Trump behaved typically, directing the seizure and withholding of my advisors' personal and other unclassified documents; despite numerous requests for their return; obstructing my Twitter account; and making outright threats of censorship. His reaction thus ranged from the mean-spirited to the constitutionally impermissible. My reaction ... my response? Game on. Book jacket., Trump's National Security Advisor took detailed notes. The result is the most comprehensive and substantial account of the Trump Administration from a senior advisor who had served three previous presidents over 30 years, with stunning revelations about happened inside the most powerful room in the nation., As President Trump's National Security Advisor, John Bolton spent many of his 453 days in the room where it happened, and the facts speak for themselves. The result is a White House memoir that is the most comprehensive and substantial account of the Trump Administration, and one of the few to date by a top-level official. With almost daily access to the President, John Bolton has produced a precise rendering of his days in and around the Oval Office. What Bolton saw astonished him: a President for whom getting reelected was the only thing that mattered, even if it meant endangering or weakening the nation. "I am hard-pressed to identify any significant Trump decision during my tenure that wasn't driven by reelection calculations," he writes. In fact, he argues that the House committed impeachment malpractice by keeping its prosecution focused narrowly on Ukraine when Trump's Ukraine-like transgressions existed across the full range of his foreign policy--and Bolton documents exactly what those were, and attempts by him and others in the Administration to raise alarms about them. He shows a President addicted to chaos, who embraced our enemies and spurned our friends, and was deeply suspicious of his own government. In Bolton's telling, all this helped put Trump on the bizarre road to impeachment. "The differences between this presidency and previous ones I had served were stunning," writes Bolton, who worked for Reagan, Bush 41, and Bush 43. He discovered a President who thought foreign policy is like closing a real estate deal--about personal relationships, made-for-TV showmanship, and advancing his own interests. As a result, the US lost an opportunity to confront its deepening threats, and in cases like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea ended up in a more vulnerable place. Bolton's account starts with his long march to the West Wing as Trump and others woo him for the National Security job. The minute he lands, he has to deal with Syria's chemical attack on the city of Douma, and the crises after that never stop. As he writes in the opening pages, "If you don't like turmoil, uncertainty, and risk--all the while being constantly overwhelmed with information, decisions to be made, and sheer amount of work--and enlivened by international and domestic personality and ego conflicts beyond description, try something else." The turmoil, conflicts, and egos are all there--from the upheaval in Venezuela, to the erratic and manipulative moves of North Korea's Kim Jong Un, to the showdowns at the G7 summits, the calculated warmongering by Iran, the crazy plan to bring the Taliban to Camp David, and the placating of an authoritarian China that ultimately exposed the world to its lethal lies. But this seasoned public servant also has a great eye for the Washington inside game, and his story is full of wit and wry humor about how he saw it played.

  • Top critical review

He got that part close to right, except there were many overseas trips and meetings that occured elsewhere.

John Bolton was the hero in every incident he wrote about, if he wasn't involved he told the hero what he thought should be done. I realize he has had many different titles and jobs over many years. I just don't see him doing and knowing as much as he tells us. I hate to sort of agree with Trump but, I feel he wrote this book to make money not to tell the world the truth about Donald Trump. Trump is definitely not fit to be President. He does not have the temperment or knowledge to be president, he does not listen to his advisors and every sentence out of his mouth is a lie. Bolton basically told many tales of Trump having no idea what to do or say. This is the part that is good and makes the book

  • The Room Where It Happened

well documented, after reading could understand why Bolton and Trump would eventually crash and burn (book result of two ego consumed individuals both should have stayed in private sector as neither appeared to be in public service.

  • Eh! The author was the draw.

It seems to be more about what others did wrong and it wasn't Boltons fault. Nothing from behind the scenes. Bolton should have testified at the impeachment. That would make the book more interesting.

  • First Person, ego centric, "This is what I saw heard and said."

IF you want to see how John Bolton's mind work and priorities are set from the inside, it is truly impressive. I was much more interested in a chronicle of the times, and it was much more first person and ego centric than expected.

  • A very bad man Bolton, discusses another very bad man Trump.

Bolton left me feeling nothing but contempt for the entire Republican establishment, and Bolton in particular. Sure Trump was a horrible president, Bolton made that clear, but Bolton did pretty much nothing about it. Perhaps that is for the best since Bolton himself lives a deluded fantasy of right wing nonsense. This book left me feeling sick to my stomach.
