This Wheeler barrel vise is really great the only thing that would make it better would be if it came with the barrel wrenches. The wooden inserts broke apart when compressed. They would not hold the barrel stationary. Aluminum inserts better. had to use a pipe wrench
The metal portion of this item is strong, however, the wooden blocks provided are brittle and burst they will not hold the barrel. I was taking an old barrel off, I had to use a pipe wrench on the barrel instead of this tool. The barrel really wasn't that tight as it broke free with little effort . Hope this helps

Great barrel vise
I am new to removing barrel from actions. After doing my research I bought the wheeler barrel vise, I also bought the action wrench for shotgun actions. By far this is the best purchase for my use. A Great Barrel Vise with Brute Strength!
I had to exert about 500 ft-lbs to 600 ft-lbs to unscrew a Mauser 98 barrel. But with a little rosin from a Rosin Bag, bought at a sporting goods store(baseball section), the barrel came off nicely. I had to bore the provided unfinished oak blocks, to precisely fit this barrel, and the oak blocks worked well. An excellent barrel vise.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
