  • Great Tool If You Know What Your Doing

This is an excellent sharpening system for people who know what they are doing and understand the angles. The little angle assistant provided with this is entirely inadequate for someone just learning. It will not lock in place and an unsteady hand will destroy blades rather than sharpen them. I don't use an angle guide personally because I sharpen my blades at different angles depending on the use of it so I think this is great. Since it's just a tiny piece of plastic sitting on top of the stone it's easy to get out of the way. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT TO ANYONE WHO ISN'T ALREADY FAMILIAR WITH ANGLES OF EDGES AND HOW TO PROPERLY SHARPEN A KNIFE. Otherwise I highly recommend this product as a much cheaper alternative to some expensive sharpeners out there.

  • Good sharpener

I’ve used this type of sharpening stones for years. While I will rarely use the coarser stones it’s good to have them for a new knife or repairing the edge on a damaged one. The Smith products have always been of good quality in my opinion.

  • Quick and easy!

Once set up and stones have the proper oil it does a great job of sharpening your knives. If you just need a quick deburring just use your preferred stone, ten quick passes and your done. Have a pouch made to hold it and the oil so I can take it in the field. Having each of the stones set in so they are firm and not moving with you as you push the blade across it then rapidly turn the stones up in grit till the job is done.

  • Works for small to medium size blades

Inexpensive and easy to use, the smith tri-hone has put a fine edge on my pocketknives and smaller kitchen blade. I would recommend this purchase for the price it is a good system.

  • Works Great, if you do your part.

The Smiths Tri-Stone set is a good value in my opinion. The set arrived very quickly and was in new condition with no issues at all. I saw a review or two that said they had chipped stones on arrival. I think that may be due to rough treatment in shipping. My were in perfect condition, though. Anyway, if you are new to sharpening by hand, be advised there is a steep learning curve. I am in the process of teaching my daughter to hand sharpen and she does get frustrated at times. Just get some old knives, watch a few You Tube or factory instruction video and keep practicing. Hand sharpening is both a learned technique and an art. I have been hand sharpening knives and tools for over 40 yrs and still mess up once in a while. It is not the stones fault, though. As for the stones, two are synthetic and one is a fairly fine finishing Arkansas stone. I have a nice chef knife that had a couple of heavy nicks about half way down the blade. About 30 minutes with the course and medium stones got most of the nicks out. Then about 15 minutes on the fine Arkansas stone, then about 20 passes on a strop, and the edge was back to tomatoe slicing sharpness. The only improvement I would like to see is that both the medium and fine stones be Arkansas. Would I order theas again. Yes and if fact I am getting another set pretty quick for a Christmas present. Great value for the money.

  • Why did I wait so long?

I had a tri stone set up back in the 80's (1980's not 1880's). Used it to sharpen my hunting knives as well as the kitchen cutlery. Well, then my boys became teenagers and at the same time my tri stone set rapidly deteriorated and then finally disappeared. Since then I've tried all sorts of "miracle" gadgets and they were all big on claims and short on results. I finally spotted the ad on ebay for this set of tri stones and the price was pretty reasonable so I bit the bullet and purchased this set. The first knife I attempted to sharpen was a really dull carving knife. I was pleasantly surprised. About 10 licks on each stone and the knife was really sharp again. That was about 3 weeks ago +/- and that blade, which I've used often, is still quite sharp. I'm really thinking about buying 2 or 3 more, one for permanent kitchen duty, one for the garage and one for the backpack and maybe one to keep next to my chair. I rate this item as top notch for the price.

  • Great item

This item is easy to use and stores away easily. Great for any kitchen or adventure you are ready to go on. Works great with all straight blades. Do not use on serated blades. Other than that I highly recommend this to anyone and will put a razor edge on your knife.
