  • An Okay GPS

The Garmin nuvi 850 is my first experience with a GPS. It has had its pluses and its minuses. The pluses are that it 98% of the time gets me to where I need to go and it was fairly inexpensive. Garmin's female voice is pleasant enough though it does once in a while have a strange pronunciation. For example, Nall Road is pronounced Null and Kenneth Rd. is pronounced Ku-neth Rd. Any boulevards are pronounced Bully-vard. These are more amusing that detremintal. The minuses are: 1) the speech recognition system is basically useless for deliveries that are highly time dependent as is the case in my job. Garmin only allows you to say each digit and alpha character one at a time instead of recognizing whole words. And even more irritating is that wants confirmation after every character. It's way faster to just enter the address via the touch screen. I was highly disappointed. 2) The screen is hard to see in shadowy daylight as the unit doesn't detect the light as dark enough to turn on the backlight. I haven't tried just turning on the night display background for full time use yet and that may solve the problem. But Auto mode doesn't work real well in the early and late parts of a day. 3) The touch screen will beep indicating it recognize you touched a character or menu item but soemtimes beeps but doesn't register what you touched. This is frustrating. Sometimes I have had to touch a character or menu item 3 or 4 times before it finally registers on the screen. 4) I bought a mount for the unit but there doesn't appear to be anyway to mount the unit without the cradle piece that gives one a place to connect the mount to the unit. Since I bought a used unit that came with nothing but the charger and the unit and the cradle mount didn't come with the cradle connector I am out of luck. With the problem with character touch registration that's just as well anyway. 5) The battery doesn't hold a charge very long. I don't know if a new battery would solve that problem and the one I have is just tired from use. 6) This unit does not come with lifetime map support. That hasn't been a problem for me but might be for you. If you need lifetime map support don't bother with this unit as map updates are around $70 each. 7) The FM radio connection to play Garmin's voice throught your car stereo doesn't work well. I have never had good luck with ANY device that is FM connection capable so this is not unique to Garmin. If you buy a used version of one of these try to get one that has all the accessories (except the speech recognition remote isn't necessary since the feature doesn't work well and isn't cheap). If you just buy the unit without any accessories I would recommend the charger and a new battery. If you want to mount the unit it can be done for $35-45. A new battery is $20-25. The bag isn't real necessary.

  • Great GPS

Great size, fits well on the dash, very good graphics and mapping. I replaced at Garmin 750 which was flaky, often took me on odd routes and couldn't find a simple address in Denver. Great tool, only wish it would interface with backup camera.
