A tough, fun classic!
Most movie tie-ins for video games are mediocre to bad, but not so for Top Gun for the NES. Clearly a lot of love went into this game: the graphics were great for the time, it includes some slick 8 bit music and the controls are smooth and crisp. Before launching, you select what missiles you carry before go into battle. You have the choice of small warhead but large quantity to huge warheads but only a few of them. The battle are typical for an air combat game, but having radar helps to watch your blind spots and you get a warning if an enemy fighter is trying for a missile lock on your tail. The rest of the instruments are clean and nice looking with useful information. This game is hard (damn you carrier landings!) but there's plenty to enjoy, worth putting in practice into and a fine addition to every NES library!
