The film is a strong directorial debut of lead actor and screenwriter Xavier Dolan. He was around 18 years old when he made the film and it is an impressive piece of work. It essentially encapsulates the complex, tumultuous relationship a young artistic Quebec teenager has with his opinionated single mother. Between disagreeing with her politics, fashion sense, and life advice the house is often filled with both their screaming voices. It can bring you to tears as quickly as it brings you to laughter, but you're in for a surprisingly refreshing dose of cinematic reality. Love is always complicated.
