Introducing the Air Jordan 13 Retro Red Flints

Air Jordan Retro 13 Red Flints are a Gym Red update of the Jordan 13 Flint, an OG colorway released in 1998. The Red Flint, released in May 2021, maintains the original color blocking, save for replacing the original blue of the upper with a vibrant red. While nicknamed Red Flint, the official colorway is Gym Red/Flint Gray/White/Black. This color scheme is similar to that of the Chicago Bulls, the basketball team where Michael Jordan became a legend.

Visual Appeal

Like the original 1998 Jordan 13 Flint, the 2021 Red Flints are high top basketball shoes boasting the dimpled and reflective textile upper created by Tinker Hatfield. Gym Red coloring can be found on this textile upper, along the collar, and outlining the tongue. The non-red portions of the upper are a bright white complementing the red throughout the vamp, predominant in the tongue, toebox, and toe cap.

Flint Grey merges with white to accent parts of the upper and midsole, with Flint Grey also present in the medial portion of the collar. The white is tumbled leather, and the gray is suede. A combination of red, white, and black comprises the outsole, with a somewhat shimmery circular red emblem sporting the Jumpman logo on the bottom half of the lateral underside of the shoe.

The Jordan 13 Retro Red Flints sport varied Jumpman and Jordan insignia to cohesively accent the brand identity, legacy, and color scheme. The top portion of the tongue sports a black Jumpman while the bottom portion of the tongue, between the edge of the laces and the throat line, sports the name Jordan in black and white. There is a Gym Red Jumpman logo on the heel portion of the insole. The Jumpman also gracefully tops the number 23 in a holographic circular emblem, located at the top of the Flint Grey section of the lateral-side heel, just below the collar.

The OG Air Jordan 13s and the Flint Colorway

Air Jordan 13 shoes were one of the last ones Michael Jordan wore on the court during his final Chicago Bulls season. These were also the shoes worn by Denzel Washington in the Spike Lee film He Got Game. The Air Jordan 13s originally released in November 1997, with the Jordan 13 Flints coming out approximately six months later in 1998. The Air Jordan 13 shoes originally released in seven colorways.

The Air Jordan 13 Flints were such an iconic colorway that this iteration has been resurrected to much fanfare several times over the years. In fact, the 2020 iteration's sales broke some website records and made it the sneaker that most impacted fashion searches. It is one of the franchise’s iconic colorways.

Converting an Iconic Colorway to a Bold Statement

Nike took one of the most iconic and popular Air Jordan 13 colorways and swapped out the cool blue for a contrasting color: fiery Gym Red. This new color scheme underscores both the shoe’s and the brand’s relation to its trademark figure, given that this color scheme is reminiscent of Jordan’s time with the Chicago Bulls.

This new colorway update also makes these shoes similar to the Air Jordan 13 Player Exclusive (PE) shoes worn by Kevin Martin. The coloring and general layout of this Houston Rockets' PE are similar to the Red Flint, but an embroidered K-12 for Kevin Martin replaced the Jumpman on the tongue.
