"Old School RuleZ"
I have a fairly high end 11.2 (7.4.2 if you're really anal retentive) receiver that is "allegedly" 125 watts per channel, and but while it doesn't sound bad, it was not what you would expect....
<br>PIcked up one of these "old school" power amp.... honking big toroidal power supply, filter caps the size of small pop cans, multiple pairs of old fashioned push pull bipolar transistor outputs.... None of this metrosexual "girly man" Class D switching power supply non-sense here..... :-)
HUGE (or is that "YUGE"?) improvement - Bi-amping the fronts and using the 5th channel for the center...
NIght and day..... Massive dynamics - percussion, piano, acoustic guitar... the attack jumps right at you...
Receivers are great value, and the new ones are pretty good, but to get full potential, there is nothing to beat the old school high current beasts of yesteryear.
Just for fun, I tossed it on the test bench....
Running all 5 channels SIMULTANEOUSLY at full rated power (try that with a receiver!) got about 162 watts per channel into 8 ohms, about 235 into 4 ohms.
This thing is "da beast" :-)Read full review
