You Never Give Me Your Money: The Beatles After the Breakup, Doggett, Peter
Sep 21, 2021
All you need is love (right)
An interesting look at the Beatles, post break up, as their (rather complicated) business, Apple, had to be accounted for. As a band the Beatles were over, but the bickering and infighting over royalties, and business decisions were just beginning. The Apple corporation was a 100 legged octopus that had tentacles so far reaching, that only teams of lawyers and accountants could even begin to understand its complexity. All from a band that sang “All you need is love” Mixed in are anecdotes and interviews that fill in the picture of the Beatles as solo artists, often competing with each other, but never as good as when they created music together. It’s a fairly balanced book, and not having read any other Beatles books, I can’t tell where the truth ends and personal opinion begins. That being said, Lennon comes off rather poorly, as a naive expounder of trite mantras, fooled by every smooth talking guru, or ‘helper’ with his hands out. At the end of the day, the dreams of the 60’s were just that. Reality has a way of resting it’s ugly head.
