A unique item. Most will want it for video transfer to digital format.
Just got this unit to use for video capture of aging 8 mm and Hi-8 tapes. As hoped, it plays back better than a camcorder, reproducing some damaged tapes that a camcorder has problems with. As a deck, it also would be more "robust" and sturdy. Keep in mind that this is a very unique niche-market item. Sony designed this for on-road and remote location use, mainly playback. It is powered ONLY by 12-volt cigarette lighter type power sources, whether playing or charging, via a charger / battery slot adapter side accessory. Before I got my 110-volt to 12-volt home adapter, I had to run it off a spare car battery! You can not use a simple one-piece low-power cigarette lighter adapter, designed for charging GPS units and the like. Not enough power and the unit will beep to let you know. The unit needs at least 2 amps and users should get an adapter rated at least 5 amps. I bought the 6 amp Schumacher PC-6 unit. Around $16 on line. This company is well-established in the battery charger field. Even with this complication, the EVO-250, made in the 2001 to 2003? era, is several years ( 9?) newer than other Sony Hi-8 non-camera "VCR-s" While not needed the record function, I tried to use it to make sure all features are working and discovered that the only way to monitor what is going through the unit is to use a Sony "Laser Link" television. Yeah RIGHT! There is only one set of RCA connections and they are EITHER in, to record, or out for playback. Clearly, this is primarily a playback unit to take on safari but should do a great job getting precious memories off my aging tapes.

Durable travel map. German. Jah!
Excellent for travel. No longer produced. Company called Borch still makes them for other countries.

Great for video transfer. These units are disappearing.
Bought used for video transfer. Not interested in recording features. Was in excellent condition.
