Is Baroque music better played on original type instruments?
I am not a music buff. I do enjoy this type of music but I am not following the twists and turns with an experts ear, I just enjoy that sort of thing. So having confessed that my opinion is NOT an experts, I think these two CDs are delightful; very distinct - you do want to hear the different 'voices' as they follow each other up and down. I thought the quality of the sound very good - these are not recently made recordings. I tried some of this music on a CD played on modern instruments and though very clear etc to me it seemed to lack some of the special quality of the earlier disc. I leave the experts to decide on that - if decision is needed?

    A box of delights
I had a box set of the Beethoven piano sonatas played by Barenboim on LPs, and missed them sorely when my gramophone packed up. So I was delighted to come upon this neat box of all fifteen re-mastered on CDs, sent for a set and found that the re-mastering seemed brighter, though this may well have been imagination and my old LPs may well have worn down before the player died. I am not a truly dedicated music lover and my pleasure is not based on informed knowledge; just my own reaction; there are many versions of this music. But for me the box is a treasure. When Klemperer first heard the recordings all those years go, he decided that Barenboim must be the pianist to record his last production of the five piano concertos. I take that as proof of the mastery shown by Barenboim in the sonatas.

    Quality doesn't date
James Stewart dominates this 1959, black and white film but that does not mean he has no support - the whole story is so well acted, so well written, that it is always going to be a family favourite. The courtroom scenes are at the heart of the film and are so different from the sober English scene we are used to that this in itself gives it a special humour exploited by the antics of lawyer James Stewart. One you can go back to many times. Transfer to DVD has given it a fine clear picture.
