He Was One of Us
1 of 1 found this helpful One might be concerned that Dutch painter Rien Poortvliet took the same degree of creative license here with the life of Jesus as with the red-hatted, animal-loving, chubby-cheeked folk he brought to life in the beloved book, Gnomes. Not to worry. Anyone who has experienced his beautiful, ambitious book, Noah's Ark, knows how gracefully Poortvliet yokes realistic, reverent wonder with adherence to scripture without having to resort to a diluted or deluded revision of a revision.
"My greatest pleasure," he says, "is in making lovely things." And he does it without misrepresenting magnolia or manure.
His goal in this lesser known gem, He Was One of Us, was not to paint portraits of Jesus, his disciples or anyone else. More honestly he draws us by countenance and gesture into familiar and often very human scenes as the time is ripe for the appearance of Jesus.
While captions written by Hans Bouma aid in identifying a specific scripture, in most cases they are redundant. Storytelling through texture, light and line is Poortvliet's forte, whether in color or, in this book, black and white. The book can be enjoyed without them, in any case.
It took some time to track this one down, and it has been well worth it.

Seahawks Elite Backpack
This looked like the best Hawks backpack and I wanted the best one as a gift for my grandson. I was somewhat disappointed to see it did not have the leather bottom I read about in an earlier description, but perhaps that was a change that came later. It is a heavy vinyl one now. It looks quite sturdy and hopefully will hold up to the use a 12-year-old will need it to endure!
