I am glad to have an open mind to old and new things.
I was first introduced to Pattis'"Easter" album in the early '90's from a friend in collage at Port Arthur, Texas. He already knew how crazy I was about Janis Joplin, so he figured (correctly) I might appreciate Smith. I was floored. I'ts sort of like seeing a painting or sculpture and saying, "I don't fully understand what the artist wants to say, but it touches my soul and makes me think". It also helped me to see that when I'm introduced to something new, I don't cop an attitude of contempt prior to investigation. I have had several copies of this album which were lost, which prompted me to re-purchase it. Not everyone will like it, may even misjudge it, so I figure it's for mature (not age wise) open-minded people. If you are disgusted with the "new sound" of american music in this new decade, you may appreciate Patti Smith.

Compare the old and new music
As I may have implied in my past reviews, my taste in music is ecumenical. What impresses my soul of rock (in this case) was the honesty of the words, making points without the angry backup sound and a spiritual union I have that draws me to ANY type of music A-Z. Rock music died in the early 2000's and is replaced with the "oop-boop" bubble-gum drivel of the early 1960's, before it was acceptable to express deep meaning in musical lyrics. It's hard to describe how I feel about this "new" music, except to say that it's all about profit and sedating the minds of the new generation which, along with the the Hollywood industry, encourages young people to just spend their money and not to think (especially independently). Let us not squash what the new generation wants to say which will help the past and future generations. William Curto

    A Great Composer
Burt Bacharach, in my opinion is one of the best composers and writers of "easy listening" of the 1960's decade (and I was born in '61!). Even as young as I was, whenever I heard any of his "artwork" (even if I didn't know who he was or who created them) there was an honesty, sincerity in the lyrics that sparked a resonant chord in me. I never thought about it until recently. To love the same type of music now as I did when a child says a lot. While the instrumentals were flawless, the words he wrote took a very thoughtful amount of time, unlike the empty, profit grabbing drivel we hear now (take your pick). To end on a good "note" listening to his music, as well as sung by various artists, (which also shows how versatile his music is) effected me close to a spiritual moment. William Curto
