Mystery Science Theater 3000 - I Accuse My Parents
This isn't the best episode of MST3K, but if you're collecting these you'll probably still want this one. The movie is a super sappy morality tale about what happens when a teenager's parents spend too much time drinking and partying. Jimmy falls for a night-club singer and also gets involved in gang activity. He's dumb as a post, though, because he doesn't realize that driving a bunch of guys in nice suits to a warehouse at midnight to "pick up a package" does not constitute a legitimate job. His parents can't really be held responsible for the fact that he's a pathalogical liar, either, though the judge in the extremely casual manslaughter trial that Jimmy ends up in seems to think so. Joel and the bots attempt to psychoanalyze Jimmy without much result. There is a short about farming before the movie which will make you cringe when you see all the DDT being sprayed all over everything, and Frank bakes an exotic dancer into a cake.

    Old film strips gone wrong
Those old 50's and early 60's short films are fascinating in a train-wreck sort of way. The way they portray white, middle-class teenagers in identical clothing rightly scares the heck out of people nowadays. The almost cult-like emphasis on the status quo and the constantly repeated anti-individualism messages are what Joel, Mike and the bots take aim at the most in these films. The first movie about home economics might as well be called "Advanced Servitude For Women." It insultingly suggests that being a man's wife is a career, and the only reason a woman would want to learn physics is to know how household appliances work. Then there's one about grooming for teenagers who are too dumb to figure out how to wash with soap and water. This one has a strong conformity message, and also makes it clear that it is the girl's job to look nice and attract the boy, not the other way around. The strangest one is about a boy who cheats in class and is practically crucified for it. The disturbing and Poe-like atmosphere makes you wonder whether or not cheating was the biggest problem teachers had to deal with back then. The film about the family having a pleasant dinner together is surreal. It seems to suggest that you should maintain a nice, pleasant atmosphere regardless of the way anyone might be feeling. Everybody just pretends everything is fine. If you want a good insight into a period of history that glorified repression, conformity and traditional gender roles, look no further. And if it's funny, too, I just consider that a bonus.

    MAD TV Season One
This set really brought back memories, like "Lowered Expectations," the dating service for people who have been rejected by everyone else. And who could forget the "McDumpster" commercial? I guess what I liked about this show and also SCTV and even SNL in the early seasons is they weren't so political back then. There's some politics, but most of it is skewering pop culture, or just silly nonsense. I used to like sketch comedy when the shows weren't reminding me of the intense stuff in daily life that I was trying to forget about. What's wrong with doing a sketch about a redneck couple who are watching cable TV for the first time? Or an office worker abusing his window privileges? This set will remind you of some of the issues that were important in the 90's, including which shows and stars were popular. It's a fun look back.
