Theme: We're the same under our skin
An astounding novel about a woman who's terribly disfigueed from childhood on, and whose perspective is likewise scarred. Finch is a cemetery caretaker, like her parents before her, and she talks to the dead who haven't "lightened" yet. She meets a dead beauty queen whose scars were inside, and learns that she is not, after all, alone in her pain and disillusionment, and as she begins to open up to the world around her, she stops communicating with the dead and talks to the living. Sounds kinda creepy, but it absolutely isn't. Reynolds' writing is descriptive yet spare, emotive yet not maudlin, in spite of the highly charged issues the characters deal with. An excellent book.

    Schoenbaum a must-read for Shakespeare-lovers
I bought this book for two reasons. The main reason was to satisfy my curiosity about an article I discovered online detailing an inflammatory pamphlet that circulated early in Shakespeare's career. It's called "Groatsworth of Wit" (for short) and was purportedly written by a man who was jealous of Shakespeare's talent. (Google it and see!) Several articles on Shakespeare referred to Schoenbaum as being an authority. The other reason I bought it was to use it as a reference for my English papers, and it's turned out to be an invaluable resource. This book is amazingly accessible--it isn't dry; in fact, it pulls you in and makes you see Shakespeare as a whole person rather than a fusty writer from the middle ages. Whether you're a Shakespeare enthusiast or a student trying to get through the semester, this book is tremendously helpful AND engaging. A must-read.
