Quite old now, but still a great camera
10 of 10 found this helpful The compact flash interface, decent optics and high resolution sensor caught my eye with this camera when I was first looking around for an upgrade to my old digicam. It's smaller than an SLR but still quite chunky; the relatively large lens does a good job of feeding light to the well implemented 8MP sensor which delivers great images most of the time. Well suited to landscape photography but can struggle a bit with ISO noise in poor light conditions.
A heavily reviewed camera at launch, check the Web for more detailed image analysis or descriptions of menus and so-on. That said, many of those reviews don't tell you that the battery seems to last for ages (hundreds of shots without flash, rear panel LCD switched on) and that the camera is built like a tank. Mine's been sent rolling down hillsides and even dropped from waist height onto the rocks of a dried riverbed (butter fingers!) yet it still seems to work as well as the day I bought it.
There are plenty of other 8MP and above cameras on the market now, usually offering faster write speeds, better sensitivity, image stabilisation and so-on, but the 8080WZ does seem to strike a very good balance of features, battery life, storage format and build quality that is quite hard to beat. Well worth considering if you're in the market for a more serious camera than the average "point and shoot", but not after the expense - or bulk - of a DSLR camera.

Last Known Good model of the Mac Mini
6 of 6 found this helpful Although it has a spinny disc by default so is rather sluggish on disc-bound operations by SSD standards, it's a solid machine with a reasonable balance of internal components and, most of all, the ability to upgrade them relatively easily. No soldered-on RAM or unusual/possibly proprietary SSD blades to be found here. The port arrangement is also good, with forward-facing for its time Thunderbolt 1 and USB 3.0, but backed up by legacy FireWire, Gigabit ethernet and HDMI to complement display out over Thunderbolt if needed. In use it is close to silent - the HDD and fan are inaudible in normal use. Especially good for an HTPC / NAS hub, but obviously a very expensive if you're going to use it just for that.

The film itself is OK but really awkward to apply
The matte surface of this film is reasonable and it's quite thick / robust, but sadly that's where the good news ends. For the very high price of this item, all you get is one single film. No cloth, no applicator card, nothing - the film and some short instructions.
When it comes to application, this thing just loves bubbles. On a completely dust free surface, it doesn't just roll down cleanly - it's too thick - so it stays lifted. You have to push out bubbles as you go, with your own e.g. credit card as an applicator and your own microfibre cloth to avoid scratches - holding the edge of the film up with one hand as you try to slide down with quite a lot of pressure to roll the film over the device without bubbles. It's not due to dust, because when you get the pressure and speed right, it'll stick down fine, but you'll find yourself having to lift it back up and retry several times.
Since this process uses both hands, there's a chance you're needing a third hand to stop your device sliding around while you do this. And since you have to lower it a bit, lift it back if there's a bubble, lower again and so-on, if it didn't have dust to start with, it will by the end. So then there's the kicker with this being a thicker, high quality feeling film - it's too thick to mould around any dust that might be present at all well, so dust-generated bubbles stay large and just won't roll out or down to smaller sizes. Thinner films perform much better here.
Finally, once it's on, it's practically superglued in place. Don't even think about trying to lift it back up to fix any near-final-edge issues once it's fully stuck; it's almost impossible to get any purchase to lift up a corner and it won't stick properly afterwards anyway.
In short, it's a huge pain to fit, it's too thick to perform well in the presence of any dust, it's really hard to remove or adjust and it's wildly, hopelessly overpriced with no application accessories of any kind included.
There are better alternatives at a fifth of the price.
