Athearn Blue Box Kit
The Athearn Blue Box kits were produced during an era in which the modeler had the opportunity to assemble a quality product at an affordable price and not break the bank.
Unfortunately, these kits are no longer offered by Athearn but are fun to build. A quick look over the easy to understand exploded instructions give you an idea of part locations and tools needed. And speaking of, you will need a pair of side cutters to remove parts from their part sprue(tree), an Exacto knife, an emery board and C/A glue.
I assembled this kit in about 20 minutes, but there's no reason to race through assembly. Test fit your parts to ensure proper fitting. Also, you can use your preference of couplers but please note: there's a metal clip that holds the coupler assembly on and if not not properly seated, it might pop off. So, some test fitting of that is necessary as well.
All in all, you will be satisfied with a nice looking kit that YOU assembled. And these kits can be modified if you want, whether you decide to change to metal wheelsets or apply metal walkways from various manufacturers, the choice is up to you to improve upon a car that has a basic starting point that already looks very nice by itself.

I haven't had too much chance to go through & use all options, but overall the use of this product that I purchased it for is pertinent. You can slow the tempo down quite a bit so you can hear your favorite bass line note by note, and remain in pitch. And you can plug your bass into a standard 1/4 inch plug and play along with your favorite bassist(or bass line)to help teach yourself a bass line. The only draw back is it does not come with a wall plug so for starters you have to purchase 4 AA batteries. I can play both cds you purchased from your favorite music store or prerecorded cds you can burn off your computer, they both work. I highly recommend this item as it is conveniently small enough to carry with you as well.

Replacing one that broke
My girlfriend had the original for many many years up to a point that one of her daughters' friend broke, so had to buy a replacement. She swore up n down on how durable and versatile this item is for food processing. This product is not made for serving big dinner parties, but just for small family like meals. It's basic use is for shredding potatoes into hash browns or heads of lettuce for salads/coleslaw. Makes for speedy process instead of the old fashion way with the knife and cutting board. But, care must be used as this item does not have an industrial motor.
