A little speaker that set the bar up high so others had to work harder.
When I first heard these in about 1973 I thought they sounded great for a small speaker, but I wasn't into small speakers so I really didn't pay much attention to them, now I can no longer play music loud and live in a smaller apartment. After building and using many small speakers I can now make a report, which includes sittig very close at 3 ft. to a room where I sit about 8ft away. To start, these are very good sounding speakers but have some short comings that keep them from being at the top of my list. First is the bass hump and lack of extension which is not the bass drivers fault, in the proper box it can sound much better. Second would be the tweeter which doesn't sound sweet or proper to my ears, it's pushy at certain frequencies, lacking at others. Vocals are nice but a little thick in the lower female and male voice which does sound great, but its not accurate to me. Most music will sound very nice on these but when I get to classical they just can't pull it off, part of that may be the BBC dip at about 3k, but it's also the lack of attack on piano notes and other instruments. That's not to say there's not a lot of stuff they do right, it's all the little things that keep it from excelling for me. I could spend a lot of time going into more detail but its not needed here. Remember your ears are different than mine, as well as your taste, so pick stereo gear that suits you. This report is just to give someone a basic view of these speakers, you will find many people speak of the attributes and short comings of the LS3/5a if you search around, just thought I should leave them here. To sum it up, great speaker for $4-500, can't ever see paying $1500. or more, that some people pay.
