Enjoy learning history of "Europe's capital" in a personal story form!
Having been to Paris numerous times, I found this book exciting as it puts construction of landmarks as a major point of interest. I love facts and figures and Rutherfurd blends them with characters that bring history and life together in a pleasant manner. At first I found it a little hard to understand why he did NOT present his story in chronological order, but as the book goes along, it all comes together... family lines surface and the connections take place. I read it chronologically until I understood the family lines were going to blend into a real story plot if I stuck with the way Rutherfurd intended. Chapter headings are simply numerical to dates in time, so you can read it either way. He emphasizes art, religion, war, and everyday life of the people living under the aristocratic chain. Without the reader really realizing it, he tells you about the most minute details of life in every age, such as the furniture, the peoples attire, the modes of transportation, the gardens, etc. I hadn't realized Parisians were always so intent on beauty and culture in the cities every space possible. I knew I enjoyed it for these qualities now, but it somehow seemed people of old would have been less interested in these qualities than what Rutherfurd presents them to have been. I thought of these qualities as having been more for the wealthy only. He presents Paris as having always been enriched by people of all socio-economical levels as people interested in the finer things of life. He presents Paris as having always been fascinating. A place where everyone has ALWAYS wanted to return to! So it is, and may it always be so. Enjoy the read, and may you go there in person as well as by this great book.

Sturdy for jeans and coats
Would buy again and now fill my coat closet for guests use and look great as well as hang all my heavy jeans! Arrived clean and without any little barbs that would snag on clothes. These are really nice.
