Well-written, exciting horse story for children, with good examples of compassion.
Had this book as a child and adored it--horse crazy. Book lost in a family move--so nice to replace it, even as the same Weekly Reader Club edition, same cover etc. Still horse crazy at 71 with a long career as horse vet; reread it immediately and transported back to the eras that fed my interest. Have rescued a few horses myself--like rescue dogs they are totally aware of their good fortune! Now the book is placed honorably on the shelf reserved for all my other childhood horse tomes!

Do a double take--this IS Secretariat.
As a 45 year long equine veterinarian, I always notice little anatomical flaws in horse statues; none here! Statue's semblance to Secretariat is quite striking; pose illustrates amazing athleticism of that horse. Lovely detailing; "paint job" accurate, detailed and fine quality. I met the horse personally, and this is absolutely "him" in body and in spirit.

A compelling book about a compelling horse
Mr. Nack, of course, is a well known sports writer which ensures a compelling read. Secretariat's story was such an amazing blend of family history, crazy luck, careful planning, a daughter's loyalty to her sick father, hard work and the incredible arrival of a horse whose underlying physical superiority, not totally appreciated until after his death, may never be equalled. How much better can it get with that amazing, true storyline. The horse's success could have been nonetheless easily derailed, had he not been surrounded and loved by an amazing crew--trainer, jockey, groom, all perfectly suited to help him succeed. If this story was written as fiction no one would believe it could happen. As they say, the stars aligned! And Mr. Nack, personally present for most of it, and with access to people who knew the rest of it, has crafted a beautiful, appropriate book about a beautiful, astonishing equine athlete and star personality. Thank you, Mr.Nack, for letting us breathe such rare air.
