Amazing mic
(2003) I have been using this mic for many many years now. primarily for vocals. This is a chinese budget mic made to replicate the german classic mics. I'm pretty sure it is manufactured by 797 which has ties to germany from the war years.
It looks generic but the sound is amazing. Some say it has too much top end sizzle. Interestingly, I have seen maybe three different freq response charts for this and have no idea which is true. To my ears, it is flat and extended. Not sibilant. The newer Baby Bottle is much more sibilant. The bass is nice n crisp not muddy like a cheaper mic. This thing sold for about $599 when it first came out. Street was $299 if I remember. I owned the 2001 first but almost never used it. I had a nady scm900 at the same time and never unplugged it. It was an early model with an output transformer. The newer ones don't have it. When I ran into this thing, my vocal recordings hit a new level. I started to hear a sound that was indistinguishable from the CD's I was buying. I was using an ART Tube PAC or a Behringer 16 channel club mixer as preamps and both sounded damn good. Im using nicer stuff now but I go back and listen to my old recordings and still love them.
So anyways, the only voices I have discovered that are not stunning through this mic are midrangeless voices like whispery deep male voice. Still good but this really shines with voices with a lot of character.
This mic has been replaced by the 2003A because people were complaining about the supposed hype top end. (sound familiar? rode nt1). If you ask me, a mic is tool, and if the thing is bright, keep it in the locker until you need a bright LDC right? It will certainly someday make something come to life.
Cons; Almost omni pattern. Will tell the world what your room sounds like.
Competition mostly have lower self noise.
To sum it up, this is a hell of a chinese mic. I have 4 or 5 of these and I will always own at least 1.
603; I dont record instruments much so I have only used this mic occasionally and dont really have much to compare it to. It definitely works better with guitars than the 2003. It does the job and it sounds fine doing it.

Aim higher if you have the money.
1 of 1 found this helpful Image quality seems good. Build quality Is fair. Rough feel to the controls. Attaches to camera a little rough. Not the quality of the lenses it emulates but it works. Get the rokinon if you have the money it just feels better.
