The greatest video game of all time
1 of 1 found this helpful I can't say anything new about Half-Life. It is the pinnacle of video gaming as both an entertainment and storytelling medium. Whatever flavor of games you like to play, if you like games of the video variety, Half-Life is the very definition of a "must-play" title.

Swan song to the old school shooter
Lambasted on release for being too similar to its predecessors at a time where simplistic science fiction shooters were out the door in favor of the seemingly more robust military simulator. The likes of Battlefield 2 may have stolen the thunder from the return of PC gaming's champion franchise, but today you can look back and laugh, and maybe cry, for those who missed out on this seriously good time romp across an alien planet. Powered by the Doom 3 engine, Quake 4 delivers an interesting if unimaginative story alongside tried and true gameplay. This is a run and gun shooter with all of the hallmark offerings of the nineties shooter: fast gameplay, tight controls, and intuitive level design. For the most part you're unlocking doors and restoring power to systems to advance, but the beautifully detailed and artistically colored-lighting environments give Quake 4 a polish and devilish adherence to the old school in a new world. It found itself floundering in the sea of cookie-cutter sameness that plagued the generation before it, but for the measly price it can be acquired for, you'd be doing yourself a disservice not to experience the old school shooter's swan song at least once.

Solid books for fans of the series
Novelized stories from the Ghost in the Shell universe. Fans of the series will enjoy this deeper exploration, though fans of cyberpunk and sci-fi can find similar stories told slightly better elsewhere.
