The Complete Book of Small-Batch Preserving: Over 300 Recipes to Use Year
    Nov 02, 2024
    Has some great recipes!
This is a great book for those starting out in canning adventures. The amounts produced by the recipes are doable for those who aren't into farmhouse-volume canning, who have never canned before, who want to make healthier versions of their favorite preserved foods. There are a few recipes for different things - jams, pickles, etc. Most are for water bath canning, but there are some for pressure canning with pretty thorough instructions. I got this book for one recipe only, the pepper relish. I helped a friend make this, and the resulting relish was out of this world delicious and it hadn't gone into the jars for water bath canning yet! My friend has used a few recipes from this book and said every one has turned out tasty good. Meanwhile, I've been wanting to make grapefruit marmalade and lo and behold there's a recipe for that! I don't know if it will be the best I've ever tasted, but I have the foundation for marmalade and that's what counts. I want to try out the dill pickles and of course the marinara sauce. The amounts are easy to manage and if the recipe is a keeper, it can certainly be multiplied by how many pints or quarts I wish to make.

    Wonderful camera
I've had this camera for a little over a month and so far I enjoy taking it with me on walks. It's very easy to use, and one important aspect I like is that it's not easy to turn the camera on by accident. My last digital camera on switch was on a dial at the top of the thing and I kept burning out the batteries because it would turn so easily even in a case. I was glad when that camera just quit working and I gladly replaced it. It only takes a few seconds for the Coolpix to turn on and be ready to use. Once I read the instructions and memorized the functions, those are fairly easy to use as well. The viewing screen is big and the camera makes camera noises as though a shutter still existed in it, so I feel like I have a film camera in my hands. The worst thing about the camera is a common complaint I have with most digital cameras with only the viewing screen, and that is that I can't really see distant objects that I might be trying to focus on to snap a shot of. I was at the beach and tried to photograph a small (eagle-sized) vulture that was flying slowly along the wave line and for the life of me I could not tell if I had the creature inside my view screen or not. Most of the time the viewing screen is just fine, but sometimes I need a little help for distant subjects. I would like the option of either a viewfinder or a viewing screen, if that's possible. Maybe the high-end digital cameras have that option, but I'll never know. Overall, I love this camera. I have two Nikon FM2 cameras, one of which I acquired in 1991, and I will never buy another SLR film camera or lens because they are the BEST. I bought the Coolpix in part because it is made by Nikon, and I figured that I couldn't go wrong, and I have not changed my mind. I'm sure they make lemons, but I've never experienced that. This Coolpix travels with me, goes out on rainy days, to the beach, in the wind, etc, and takes great pictures in any kind of light or dark. It's compact and easy to just grab'n'go. The rechargeable battery pack will eventually stop recharging, and the replacement will probably cost $20, but it's still better than buying a bunch of non-recharge batteries and over time probably costs the same. No big deal! The battery pack has the same life-span as two AA batteries... maybe even longer. I am very happy with my decision to purchase this camera. It's fairly easy to use, looks nifty, has a good heft to it, works wonderfully in a variety of situations, has few detractions, and is in a price range that most people can use it as a starter camera.

Long Bright River: A Novel by Moore, Liz
    Feb 14, 2024
Seems rather slow in the beginning.
The protagonist immediately comes across as something of a cold fish. Is this intentional? I haven't read enough to decide yet. She appears to dislike her partner, whom she disdainfully describes as somewhat self-centered and therefore dull-witted. If this is so, then why should she spend so much time talking about him? Who cares? I don't. I haven't delved deeply enough yet to get to the meat of the story, but so far amn't impressed. I am of course biased by the writing style. I love some stories that start out slowly, but they draw me in nonetheless because they are rich in description and color. This story starts out slowly, and I'm praying it will pick up the pace before I fall asleep. My "yes" recommendation is for those who like Moore's style of writing.
