A good basic introduction to medieval verse.
1 of 1 found this helpful I really enjoy this book. I bought it because of an interest in Medieval music and things medieval.
The book consists of an anthology of medieval verse and poetry and is split into several centuries, from the thirteenth to the fifteenth centuries and further sub divided into secular,religious and moral pieces.
Perhaps anyone with a total lack of knowledge of the medieval language might initially find this book a bit difficult, but some fairly good notes are enclosed with a basic dictionary.
There is very little to dislike about this publication once you have realised that there was no standard spelling at the time of these verses - so several different spellings of a word may appear and, over the span of time that the book covers, the spellings and formats of the language change.
The book compares very favourably with others that I have read and would be a good addition to the library for anyone taking initial steps into the subject
