Unearthing a Detective Gem. Van Dine needs to be Rediscovered.
One cannot write a review of any of Willard Huntington Wright's (AKA S. S. Van Dine) novels without giving away the intricate plot. The storyline is intricate and well thought out. The characters are well developed. Wright's grammar is perfect but it is not stilted in any way. Be prepared with a dictionary and some paper to write definitions on as you will indeed to increase your vocabulary if you so desire. Philo Vance is the American Lord Peter Whimsy, but where Lord Peter is exuberant and lively, Vance is reserved and laconic. Both are extremely witty and well read. Vance makes numerous references to Shakespeare, poetry, art, and history to make his points. He speaks French, German, Spanish, and Latin. You will be amazed at the plot. He has written twelve novels and each is extremely entertaining. Wright believes that the reader should have access to the same clues Philo Vance has so that he can solve the mystery too. Every novel takes place in 1920-30s New York City. It is a wonderful history of New York and if you are familiar with the city, you will love reading these novels. Van Dine inserts himself into the novel as a character which is unique. He is Philo Vance's Dr. Watson. Begin with The Benson Murder Case and read them in chronological order. If you love Dorothy Sayers, you will love Willard Wright. Seventeen movies were made from his novels. His first novel was published in 1926. Wright's Philo Vance is the precursor to Dashiell Hammett's Sam Spade and Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe. You will get caught up in the plot before you know it and won't be able to put it down.

Sharpe at his best.
It is another wonderful book about Sharpe and Harper. It is a good as anything that Bernard Cornwell has written. Any review of the book would be a spoiler. It is unpredictable other than Sharpe and Harper will survive as you can see by "Sharpe's Devil.

A Wonderful Experience
It is "Hamlet." It is a wonderful tale and Kenneth Brannaugh spares nothing in this production. It is a feast for the mind and the eyes. See it! Buy it! You won't be disappointed. Brannaugh's production and Mel Gibson's are both superb.
