Casio EXILIM EX-Z57
The size is great: it's tiny and fits even in a shirt pocket. Pictures are excellent for the size of the camera. I read reviews in which these tiny cameras are compared with full-size cameras of the same pixel count. Obviously something has to give, or why would anyone use a full-size camera? For its size, the pictures are amazing.
This camera has a very intuitive menu that makes all functions easily available and easy to read in even bright light on the oversize lcd.
The build quality is excellent, especially when compared to other cameras with their cheap rubber flaps covering various ports and access points. The dock is great. I never have to remove the battery or card, I don't need a separate card reader. The camera lives in its dock and is always ready to use. Downloads to the computer are a click away.
I actually bought the Olympus and Pentax equivalent cameras on eBay and sold them again as neither compared well to the Casio. With the Casio I can easily set my own parameters with ISO, white balance and other functions. The Olympus gave me none of these options and the pictures, well, sucked. The Pentax Optio felt like a cardboard kid's toy compared to the Casio. It worked well but was too junky feeling and looking. The Casio looks and feels like the precision instrument it is.
The only other camera I consider to be comparable is the Canon Elph, but after reading about all the problems with broken lcd's (google canon lcd breakage) I decided to pass on the Canon.
Another plus is the cost of this amazing little unit.
The ONLY negative is that a viewfinder would have been nice. It's an easily overlooked negative, though, as there have only been a very few times when I had to actually shade the lcd to see my subject.
All in all, I've very happy with this camera. And when I need to know that I will get publishable, excellent photos for sure, I use my full-size camera!
Update!
I've had this little camera for over two years now and have taken over 2000 pictures with it. All the above still holds true and after playing with friends' similar cameras, I'd dtill choose this one over anything else comparable. The only thing some of the others have improved upon is a 4X or even 5X optical zoom instead of this camera's 3X. Again, a small point, since I edit any photos I really want to keep anyway, and cropping a high-resolution picture works just about as well as a zoom for most things for which I would use a pocket camera.
I've Web published lots of photos from this camera, some taken during the same shoot as with some SLRs, and the reason we picked these photos is because they were better!
Bottom line, too bad you can't buy a new one any more! If you can find a good used one on eBay, go for it!

Phone is like new, good battery, everything works as expected. Only one little thing, though: How hard would it have been to include the ten-cent sim-tray removal pin?
