    ScanMaker 6000 is decent scanner
I agree with some points from the previous reviewer. The ScanWizard software is clunky, though I never had it quit or fail to run. I have the most current version. Also, the scanner is slow to start (about 30 seconds) while it waits for the bulb to warm up. That's normal for a scanner that doesn't use LEDs like a few of the newer scanners do. Scan quality is quite high for documents and photos, and I used it for this purpose for several years. The 6000 also has a transparency adapter. That was the reason I bought it. I get best results at 3200 and 1600 dpi settings. Other settings have a lot more grain. And by best, I mean fair. If you want to scan slides at really high quality, you'll need either a dedicated slide scanner or a lab. If you have fewer than several hundred slides to scan, I'd go with the lab.
NEW Epson WorkForce ES-200 Duplex Document Scanner #B11B241201

A few quirks with first-rate results
Facing a daunting pile of documents to scan, I needed a serious scanner upgrade. I was using a duplex scanner on my HP printer. Results with that set up were excellent though painfully slow. I couldn't face the 1000+ pages at such slow speed (over 20 seconds per page in duplex mode). I sought the best, fastest scanner I could find on my limited budget. This little Epson was an excellent choice. Results are fast and accurate. My project is quite a bit less daunting. For the quirks: - If I load more than 15 pages at a time, the first 2 or 3 pages often go through together (as if they were stuck). My cure is to load no more than 15 at a time - resulting in very few "stuck" pages. And this only happens with the first pages. I have never had any pages get "stuck" together from further down. - When adding pages to the current scan (like when I have more than my 15 page max), the software does not remember the settings. I have to reset the scan settings before scanning the added pages. Irritating quirk, and just plain sloppy programming. - If the first page is smaller (shorter or narrower) than the second, the two often go through together. This only happens when the first page is smaller. It doesn't seem to happen when those same pages are later in the stack. Curious, but I can work with this. I give this scanner four stars despite the quirks because it is fast and accurate, giving me the high-quality scans I seek. The one missing star is for the quirks.
