Excellent ADSL Modem Router that's fast and loaded with useful features
2 of 2 found this helpful The ASUS DSL-N55U Wi-Fi ADSL Modem Router is a nice piece of kit. Underneath its black tartan exterior there is a well thought out device that's packed with features.
We live at the end of the line when it comes to broadband internet access, with just a 6km pair of 50 year-old copper wires connecting us with the interweb. This router copes with these limitations admirably. It provides a fast, solid, secure connection to the internet and is a great local network router for connecting PCs, Macs, mobile phones, printers and a couple of Chromecast devices to each other and the web. Without getting technical, the N55U has two core processors in it - the majority of other routers have just one. One processor handles the DSL modem/WAN, the other runs the wireless 802.11N dual-band 600Mb/s router/LAN. This extra horsepower shows - the network is more responsive and faster. Local file transfers and backups are quicker, printing documents on the networked printer is a doddle (and setting up a printer shared printer using one of the router's two USB ports took under 5 minutes), viewing streamed shows simultaneous is seamless and surfing the web is actually quick and responsive (at last!).
Most wireless cable and modem routers come packed with functionality that the average user will never use and the ASUS N55U is no different in this regard. DMZs, guest networks, port triggering, NAT passthrough management and a whole host of other functionality can be managed from the web management interface and a whole load more through the command line if you really want to get under its hood and that's all great, but what's really impressed me is its speed, stability and incredible value - second hand a pristine example like the one I found can be picked up for £35-£45. So if you're looking for a reliable box to connect to the web through a DSL connection then this Modem/Router should definitely be high on your list of contenders.

Good quality external power supply unit that delivers a constant voltage and current
One of the problems I have is our local electricity network is historically rather variable. The voltage delivered can vary from 230VAC to over 250VAC, which can lead to problems if the power adapters are not good quality. I tested this PSU, running it on a test rig from 220VAC to 260VAC and from 45Hz to 70hz and it delivered a constant DC voltage from 11.9 to 12.1 Volts with a 3 Amp load. That might sound very technical so the basic message is this - this is a power supply unit that delivers a constant 12 Volts and 3 Amps and it does it reliably for a very good price.
I'm now using them with confidence to power LaCie D2 Quadra disk drives in the knowledge that whatever issues there may be with delivering a constant mains voltage to the house, these power supply units will satisfactorily deliver a 12v, 3A power supply to high quality electronics with negligible noise or variations in voltage.
(Remember, to protect your electronics and computer equipment, always make sure that you have the proper rating of fuses in your plugs and always use a high quality surge protector that you check regularly).

Probably the best Macbook Pro to date
3 of 3 found this helpful But wait… it doesn't have a Touchbar does it so it can't be the best, can it? My opinion is yes, it can. For traditional MBP users like me it's got 2 x Thunderbolt, 2 x USB3, HDMI, SDXC and a power socket. I'll take that any day over a couple of USB C sockets (that you also have to use share with the power supply) and a faddy Touchbar. It runs cool, the battery will actually give you 10 hours use and you don't have to buy at least 4 USB C dongles.
