With age comes wisdom
Rick Astley has always had a great voice. I was on holiday in Greece on the island of Kos when I first heard the irresistible beat of Never Gonna Give You Up. But what made my ears price up was the deep, resonant vocal that punched it's way over the top. It had the mellifluous tone that always distinguished Nat King Cole but with a modern twist. I was smitten. Now many years later Mr Astley gifts us his take on a classic repertoire that encompasses his love of wonderful songwriting. Every track on Portrait is beautifully executed. Where the cynics might decry this collection as "schlock" I adore it's integrity and humanity. Listen not to the false prophets. Let your heart and mind respond to an artist displaying his artistry.

Wild water ride
I have been wearing this Dior classic - and this fragrance is certainly comparable to being swathed in a magnificent robe - since it first burst into life by virtue of the incomparable nose of Roudnitska. Men's fragrance adornments tend to be more stable than those offered to the female market, but this citrus orchard surrounded by a dazzling array of flower borders took the masculine to a different level. For those with enough nous it should become a staple. It is neither day nor night, neither whimsical nor whetstone. It is as individual as the skin of the man whose instincts lead him to the object of his pursuit.....beauty.

Twin hob heaven
When my once reliable gas oven blew up one sunny but ultimately sad day I was not so much distraught about the destruction of an eagerly anticipated roast leg of lamb with garlic and rosemary, it was more a case of becoming petrified. So that was me and the lamb inedible in equal parts. The gas was turned off and I issued ex-WW2 masks to the guests. We looked like something from a failed B movie by Hammer. I dithered for 24 hours. To gas or not to gas? The coward in me won. I decided that fracking was no longer to be my lifestyle. Ok, I mused, we have to get a temporary alternative; temporary but safe. I remembered looking a a portable electric twin hob at a time when we had contemplated a nomadic existence involving an ancient caravan and a form of madness. A quick search revealed the dinky Andrew James solution. I am still using it. Although the gas oven has been removed and, I presume, cannibalised and reduced to an eco-friendly skeleton I have still to fill the kitchen void left by its absence. Folks, this little gem with its little footprint has made my one pot cooking revolution make Che Guevera's efforts look paltry. Vive la twin hob! Vive la one pot! Or two pot if you include the steamer for the veggies. Small IS beautiful.
