Putin's Russia, the Fix is In
1 of 1 found this helpful This was a complex film with characters who didn't behave as I expected, even as so many of them were drunk. The competition between people of different levels of power and connection in Russia-controlled Eastern Europe produces scenes familiar from mafia films, as well as scenes where the law is portrayed as just a lot of fast talking decisions where power, not fairness, decided. But also complex family dynamics, friends who may have betrayed the protagonist, affairs, and small ambitions thwarted. None are without fault, and the system is designed to take advantage of every flaw.
Americans should take note. This is what an authoritarian state is like: The fix is always in, your ambitions mean nothing, and your rights are aspirational, not enforceable.

Unexpectedly delightful
It's a beautiful film. Slow. And the main character is shall we say light on dialogue. But it's an unexpected delight, and totally different than the usual wuxia films I've seen.

The title is "Clean" not "Clean Good"
I'm on a mission to see both everything Assayas directed, and everything Cheung has been in after seeing this and Irma Vep. This is a powerful picture about both music and addiction, and it feels real. Assayas has a gift for making films that feel real, even when they break the fourth wall in some ways. And Cheung is his perfect muse, and an acting force. You need to see "Clean."
