Strange story
Daniel Day Lewis said his role affected him.I can believe it. It's best seen as an exaggerated tale of a controlling man being overcome by an intuitive but forgiving young woman .It could more easily have been a pedestrian murder tale. Instead she takes a big risk and turns the story in love conquering them both.Not for the totally reasonable.

A mental feast for a greedy for detail reader.
One of the most satisfying novels I have read in years. The intertwined and insightful stories of an extended family through decades reflects so much human reality I was eager for more.
Without being too obvious, Beth Gutcheon presents us with characters who flesh out over time and we come to understand them. I was near tears with pride in the best side of humanity;because I never heard the story of how the Danes overwhelmingly supported their Jewish citizens against the Nazis. All those brave, selfless people resisting underscore my hope that people can be brave in the face of very poor odds of success. But, even those not involved in the European war stories held my interest. It's almost as though no character was wasted as being superfluous. The ending is a powerful surprise, which, given the rest of the book, says a lot.
The sequel, "Good Bye and Amen" is done in a different style but, it to held me from the first to last page. I truly enjoy this writer.
