Greatness is not What you Think
The beauty of Ingram's manuscript is that it turns greatness on its head. Whereas the world defines greatness as fame and fortune, Ingram says that we need to understand God's version of greatness which is service to others. If we know His definition, then we can aspire to that with every facet of our lives without becoming prideful or arrogant. Our modern world needs a servant's heart instead of the entitlement spirit that currently exist. He lists 10 steps that can be taken for any person, or leader, to move towards greatness in God's eyes. Each step is vital for success and overlooking one of them will minimize the successful possibilities of your life or leadership. Personally, the chapter entitled "Dream Great Dreams" resonated well with me because we dream only. Instead of pursuing that dream, we create excuses why we cannot get there; however, Ingram provides a novel analysis to this issue. The key is to have the right dream (God's) and not to settle for what we think is best for our lives. In pondering great dreams, he makes 3 significant statements to refocus our pursuit. Here are those three statements: (1) “the dream, it seems, will cost us our life;” (2) “every dream passes through the cross;” and (3) “the cross rings you to a place of total and absolute surrender of all you have and all you are. You submit everything in obedience to the vision or dream God has given you for your life.” The first step is to get out of the way and let God do his work. If you are looking for statistical analysis similar to that of Jim Collins in Good to Great, this is NOT the book for you. If, however, you seek to find a solid explanation of how to achieve greatness that God demands, then definitely get a copy of this book.

A wonderful and insightful read that I am taking my entire office through!
Susan Scott has followed up her initial work - Fierce Conversations - by applying many of these same principles directly into the workplace. In doing so, she examines the top worst business practices and debunks the myth that these are, in fact, best practices. Throughout the manuscript, Scott provides detailed examples and cogent analysis to prove her point to the reader. If you have not read her earlier work, that is perfectly fine. She provides a succinct overview of Fierce Conversations in the initial pages, and that information is enough for the reader to immediately plunge into these deliberations. I do highly encourage you to, at some point in the future, go back and read the foundational work. Her company also has a website with regular white papers and articles that continue to drive you toward a "fierce" mentality and conversational nature. Never forget that conversations must be "fierce" in order to be authentic. As she says, careful conversations are not fierce ones. Do not, however, confuse these types of conversations with debates. A conversation is not about winning or losing but has 4 purposes: (1) to interrogate reality, (2) to provoke learning, (3) to enrich relationships, and (4) to resolve problems. Leadership is the need of our modern world -- in society, in politics, in business, and in churches. To lead, you must stop hiding and reveal who you are. Ask the tough questions. Provide direct and relevant feedback. This book can help you but you must be willing to take the risk yourself.

The seminal work on America's most important Chief Justice
By far, Jean Edward Smith has produced THE significant work on the defining Supreme Court Chief Justice in American History. Not only does the author provide the story of his family, founding principles, fight in the Revolution, friendship with Washington, Federalist politics, feud with Jefferson, and framework for the Supreme Court, Smith provides a plethora of "Jeopardy worthy" trivia facts that are neat (i.e. Marshall had an interesting piece to do with the cracking of the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia). By far, the power of this work rests in the details. This tome is not for the faint of heart or those that seek a short and basic biography. The book has 500 plus pages of text on Marshall and more than 200 pages of research citations. Smith clearly did his homework in preparing this outstanding and award-winning work. I believe the strength of the work is in those details but can be evidenced even further with the in-depth analysis of the major cases under Marshall's responsibility. The author incorporates citations from the Court's opinions with just the right balance between legalese and layman's terms. You do not need a legal background to be able to understand these cases; and that fact, I believe, is the skill of Smith's prose. This book abounds with lessons of leadership that would benefit anyone's time to read and review. I highly recommend it for any reader, but especially those with a bent towards the law. In fact, I would require this book as reading in any Constitutional Law course.
