    Closer, but still no cigar
They say the 3rd times the Charm, while that is often over used in this case it finally rings somewhat true. I am a long time fan of Modesty Blaise and have waited patiently for over 25 years to see a good production of her brought to life. After all the 60's spoof film with a blonde Modesty was just annoying to watch and the 80's ABC pilot was not as silly but still off the mark with a lite brown haired Modesty. It seemed to take 2 more decades before someone said " How about putting on screen the Modesty Blaise we all know and love that was written by her creator Peter O'Donnell?" So after about 40 years in strip stories(96) and 13 books someone went back and told her origins(almost). Don't get me wrong ! I LIKE THIS FILM. I even have the title for it's sequel(.....and this is Willie Garvin)and if you strickly use material from Mr. O'Donnells books you can have a great 2nd film. Watching this DVD you do get the feeling you are seeing Modesty's origin and see where her character has come from and where she might be going. But.... here's the cigar reference, they did make 3 little mistakes that annoy True Fans of Mam'selle as her people called her.1- she didn't wear shoes until she was 14 and yet the young girl starts off wearing boots that she never loses. 2 - they don't allow for the time she tended sheep for a bedouin tribe of arabs at about 11 or 12. 3 - they had Lob teach her martial arts and that she didn't learn from him but later on. Basically i can live with these mistakes and a couple other minor changes, but others big problem with this is that her right hand man and partner in trouble Willie Garvin is not in this film. I see the need to tell her story on its own and how this was cheaper to make and the producers hoped this would lead them into a bigger budget film with Willie and all thier fun. But sometime things don't work out the way we hope or plan. If they read this find me and let's talk about the sequel. If not than fans can also enjoy the extras on this disc.an interview with Peter O'Donnell and a listing and desription of all the strip stories. Also 2 different audio commentaries from producers and writers that some the care they had for the project. As I said 3rd times the charm(almost). But i did buy 3 copies of this and gave 1 away to spread the love around. I got to keep 2, after all i might just wear 1 out after all they did finally make a raven haired Modesty Blaise without it being silly or american or untrue to the character. Now if only we could see .....and this is Willie Garvin.
