Flags in the dust would be banned today
There’s a reason Faulkner won a Nobel. He’s one of America’s best ever. Read his novels and treasure them because he couldn’t find a publisher today. Eventually his work will be banned, probably burned. Flags in the dust, especially, would be considered too racist and sexist to ever see publication. Yet it is a wonderfully written time capsule of life in Mississippi before World War Two.

Winterkill is a fun read.
Winterkill is wonderful. Like all CJ box novels, the plot moves at breakneck speed with lots of twists and turns. There's no verbose navel-gazing for Joe Pickett. He paints his scenes, sets his moods and develops his characters very well without a lot of wasted words. I have a mental picture of all his friends, enemies and family.
