A solid machine but of limited abilities
7 of 7 found this helpful I bought this Sony HDD / DVD recorder to replace my last one, a Samsung HR855 which had gone faulty after only 18 months!.I was not impressed by the fact the Samsung machine had gone faulty after such a short time and found out this was a common problem.
First the good news; the RDRHXD970 was recommended for it's reliability by 2 people who researched it and had bought it already.It's relatively easy to set up with automatic time/date feature and is a quiet solid machine.It's DIVX compatible and has an intuitive menu, but transferring media from HDD to disc takes some figuring out.
Now the bad news.Firstly like another Sony DVD I'd owned its quite "picky" over which discs it will play.I've many discs transferred off an old Daewoo VCR to Disc machine in the "Plus-R" format which were not finalized and it won't play any of them; my previous machine played them no bother.
Secondly it will only back-up media HDD to Disc and not Disc to HDD; many other makes on the market will do both and I found this a very useful feature for saving old concerts I've recorded over the years; its a lot easier to access them saved on your hard drive than swopping DVDs every time.
In conclusion its OK for what it does, up to a point.Obviously time will tell if it proves reliable.The 64 thousand dollar question would I buy it knowing what I know now ? in all honesty probably not.

I bought this monitor on the recommendation of "Which" consumer magazine and it hasn't disappointed!
Easy and simple to set up and use, compact yet robust I have no qualms about recommending this product to anyone.
