Vintage Panasonic RF 1080 still Speaks with Authority
I had one of these in the mid 70s when I was in grad school. The RF 1080 is a solid 3 band radio covering AM FM and PSB transmissions. While many first-responder agencies have migrated to digital bands in the 800 range, the RF 1080 covers the NOAA weather band, and if you know what to adjust it can bring in 2 meter ham operators. Many rural-county sheriff, fire and emergency services still use channels in the 148 - 174 mhz range which can be received by this set in a fully-stock alignment. It has no chips on its circuit board, has analog tuning, and uses discrete mid 70s solid state technology. This means if there's a problem a technically-oriented user can get out the multimeter, the soldering iron, and in many cases can doctor it back to health. This is one attractive vintage radio that can be used in emergencies, and can be taken traveling due to a very sensitive AM tuning circuit. Have a nice one for inside-the-home, and a second unit with a bruised or dinged case as a travel radio

The Grundig YB400 a good travel radio
1 of 1 found this helpful The Grundig YB400 and the slightly more recent YB400pe are very good portable shortwave receivers, offering strong reception on longwave, a m broadcast, f m, and shortwave bands. The owner's manual and the controls are quite intuitive. The learning curve is not long or steep as it is with many recent C Crane, Eton, Sangeaen, and Tecsun models with long menu trees and multiple functions for each key. Sideband reception is stable enough to provide rock-solid voice and morse code reception. In the wee hours of the morning it picked up broadcasts from New Zealand and the Asian beam of the BBC World Service without effort, in spite of the fact that these were aimed away from North America and aimed toward local audiences. If one doesn't mind a minor bruise on the case, these sets may sometimes be had for around U S $50 - including seller's price, shipping fees, and local taxes. This radio makes a good travel set and a good first radio for a person who is just developing an interest in Shortwave or Ham radio.
