Huge
This pedal has 3 gain stages! I opened it and it has 2 circuit boards! I don't turn the gain much past noon to get all the JCM gain I can handle with single coils. The knobs are very interactive; all of the dials effect loudness, and the scoop control is different in character from the concentric controls in a typical "metal" stomp. So just buy it instead of a pizza and six pack and dial in your favorite flavor. There's plenty to work with. Nice pedal.

SD-1...Still the one
15 of 15 found this helpful I've played just about every type of OD/Distortion circuit out there. For the money, and even regardless of price, the Boss SD-1 is still the pedal to own if you want to play lead guitar with some sustain and overdrive. As far as I know, they haven't changed the circuit in 35 years. And for about 50 clams, it's the OD to have if you're going to have one on your board. I've been playing strats for 45 years. I used to be a "purist", guitar-cable-amp. Now, this is my go-to pedal after many years of trying to coax and tweak a smooth overdrive tone out of the various tube amps I've owned and played. Want to just play and enjoy your tone? Buy a Boss SD-1 and stomp on it!

Great, pure OD
1 of 1 found this helpful The OD-3 is a great pedal. It gets oh-so-close to the tone of a clean tube amp turned way up so that the power tubes are clipping. Except with the Boss OD-3, you don't have to risk your ears bleeding to get there. Great for anything, especially Blues. There are a lot of "Blues Drive" style of pedals out there. The OD-3 has the range and quality to give me the combination of harmonics, grit and sustain that I'm looking for when I want the tone of a non-master-volume tube amp, pushed to break-up tone. I like the sounds my single-coil pickup guitar can make using this pedal.
