Fresh, compelling, and long-lasting.
Despite the technological prowess and biting satire of GTA, Sleeping Dogs sets itself apart from other urban open worlds in some big ways:
- Compelling undercover cop storyline in a new setting - Hong Kong as opposed to America - under a tighter yet smoothly-progressive mission structure where you are good and bad - or more of one over the other.
- Side quests that support the narrative elements and your abilities, often funny or interesting. So many street races, too, and the driving mechanics are tight and awesome; the RAM ability... A Godsend of fun.
- Collectibles scattered throughout that aid your progression. Health shrines increase your max health; Jade Statues earn you a point to learn a new fighting move and a life lesson, lockboxes for cash and clothes, and more.
- Hong Kong is alive thanks to authentic representation of Cantonese-English language mixing in NPCs and main characters, interesting random urban life moments ("Help! He stole my purse!" - Drop-kicking the guy is hilarious every time), a strong attention to environmental detail based on wise on-location scouting done during development, and your various options and challenges around every corner assuring you'll do much more than missions with flexibility.
- An emphasis on melee combat than gunplay, even though gunplay will take up a nice chunk. It's also sensical; this is a story about gangsters that are aware of their environments and the impact of their actions, and an emphasis on gun combat would make Hong Kong an unrealistic warzone, because an over-the-top satire like GTA this is not.
This is, however, a believable, personal crime-cop thriller where you'll be attached to the characters in surprising ways led by a compelling lead, Wei Shen, voiced by Will Yun-Lee.
Aside from him, Kelly Hu and other notable voice and Hollywood actors are here. Best to not spoil, but you've heard some before and they do a good job. Their characters feel like they serve a role in Wei's journey rather than random criminals with a few missions before they disappear.
Sleeping Dogs does suffer, though, from lack of technological polish. Wei can be wonky to control frequently due to his heavy weight in-game (but his character is light and fit), character models can look like plastic dolls, animations can be weak at times, and the freaking camera has an annoying mind of its own. After a while, you learn to leave the camera alone. Then there are the gunplay mechanics which are servicable at best. While it feels good to shoot, some button choices for cover, picking up weapons and leaping won't always stick and might risk your life in combat. If you're used to more traditional/popular cover-shooter mechanics in action games, this game will take some getting used to. Overall, gun combat was still fun and didn't overstay its welcome, serving the narrative well, too.
Sleeping Dogs may have its issues, but the fun and variety is long-lasting and like no other thanks to the emphasis on melee combat, collectibles that serve you, and variety in challenges. It's fresh and even when you're done with the lengthy story missions, nothing you do is boring. Even drinking soda gives you increased melee damage, and that can come in handy when doing drug busts where you have to kick thugs' asses first - who are all over and progressively get tougher - hack cameras, and direct cops to arrest them during a deal later. Added cop rep equals handy abilities. And not to mention the criminal side quests. Be good and bad, have all the same fun.
Make sure you have a pork bun, because a man who never eats pork buns is never a whole man. You'll know what I mean when you play.
*The PS4 edition comes with two DLC missions and slightly-better textures and character models, but only marginally. The city itself looks better here than on last-gen consoles. It will still be an improvement for you.
