A solid solar charger with a great warranty
I got this for a 6-month international bicycle trip, for which it worked well charging my phones, kindle, my rechargeable AAs and my girlfriend's phone. It eventually developed a loose connection somewhere--perhaps because I made the mistake of carrying it on the outside of my pack, or maybe because it got banged a bit at one point. I was still able to bend it in a certain way to get it charge my devices by the end of the trip. Upon my return to the US suntactics replaced it with a new one. In addition to the S8 I also use the S5 on my hiking trips.
The only better alternative I'm aware of is just to carry a powerbank of the equivalent weight. But then you're dependent on finding an outlet at some point.
I've used an amp meter to test at least my *s5* and it is true, as suntactics state on their site, that if device and panel gets too hot the amperage can be as low as half as what the panel is listed as. For example, on the older s5, rated at 1A. The best I could get on a cool clear spring day has been 0.9A. Left in the sun on a hot day, the amperage has gone down to as low as 0.4A and I'd wonder why it was charging slowly. Cooling panel and device (the panel with some water, the device by shading it better), I got the amperage up to 0.6A. It is also important to see what input amperage your devices can handle. Some older powerbanks won't benefit from anything more than .85A (if the panel could output 1.7A the device would not charge any faster).
Eventually at least with the older models the plastic will delaminate a bit from the panel. This doesn't seem to affect performance but it definitely doesn't look as good as when it was new. And with mine it may have been worse because I would put it on my pack to trickle charge a powerbank. So the plastic hinge got a lot more movement than it would have had I just used it when I was stationary.

Heavier than the previous version but much tougher. The toughness is worth it-- sticks would puncture the sole of the previous ultra.

Works well. Slightly heavier than suntactics but performs better.
I'm looking for a replacement for my suntactics panels. This renogy panel performs better (.5A vs .4A in somewhat hazy conditions), and it is better able to charge my Kindle for some reason. Durability I'm not sure about yet. But durability is the main issue i have with suntactics, so time will tell. Not all portable panels can deal with wear and tear of being packed in a frameless pack. The connection between the USB plug box and panel seems to break in time with suntactics. In addition long term roasting in the sun may cause panel to be less efficient? We'll see.
