Nice stuff for a decent price but can feel more like Billiards than Go...
Honestly it WAS a good deal and thus I should have been more suspicious of its possible drawbacks. I don't say "suspicious" because I consider myself ripped off, but because I didn't do my due diligence in looking the product over. I was under the impression I would be getting a standard size Go set at a very reasonable price and trusted the images were of the product (so the stones would be uniform in size which is often not the case with really cheap Go sets). I later immediately regretted my purchase when I wondered if the size might explain the price. Indeed it did and to be fair there are images that communicate the miniature size of the materials involved in this Go set. However I do think the name of the product should include a measurement of the board if the manifacturer/seller wants to deal as honestly as possible in the future. I am also rather disappointed that there are some rough patches on the board where the sanding is inconsistent. But once again, for the price, its a substantial deal if you really want the product, which you may not and I'll explain why.
I really have to question the viability of a Go set like this for several ergonomic reasons. When I was looking at the images, I thought okay, I'm getting a smaller Go set than I bargained for, fair play. When I began to use the set, its Achilles heal was revealed, Newton's laws of motion. Look, these are small and lightweight plastic "buttons" that have minimal contact with the board. I luckily have pianist's fingers (though none of the commensurate musicianship) but if I drop one of these bad boys somewhere on the board, there's a good chance he's flying Kamekaze airlines and taking out some of his good friends (and enemies) with him. I was playing a game against myself, it was going nicely for 100 or so moves and then I dropped a piece and found I had no idea how to restore the local position that had just been firebombed by the rogue particle. Thus the game was decidedly over. I can also imagine people with fat fingers disturbing things quite easily as they try to grapple the small and unstable pieces. There are Go sets at this scale which are magnetic and cost maybe 15-20 dollars more but because they will keep things in place I would recommend those over this cheaper alternative.
Overall I am happy I did not spend more money on something that appears to definitely be the cheapest Go set you'll find that has a wooden board and some decent quality to it BUT I do not think the price will justify the frustration that may result when clumsiness and elementary physics come into play.
Hey, they asked me for a review...
