Creatures from Beyond: Nine Stories of Sci-Fi Excellence
I frequently tell my fellow sci-fi enthusiast friends this book is in my top-ten list of science fiction short story anthologies. I don't claim to be an expert or even a connoisseur, but being a serious fan of the genre for over 55 years, that's quite an accolade coming from me. I found all 9 stories in this book to be quite engaging and entertaining, each in its own way. For the most part, they are what I would call page-turners. Most of these stories are from well-known authors in the genre. And they span a range of time with the oldest story having been written in 1927, the newest in 1973. In that time range, the golden age is well represented here. In each of these tales, the Creatures are interfacing with humanity here on Earth. Some that seem monstrous, really are. Others that would seem monstrous or menacing are actually not at all. Then some which might be somewhat alarming at first turn out to be, well, perhaps just strange or puzzling. And most interestingly IMHO, one that seems to be a frightening deadly menace turns out to be not so much a direct threat to humanity, but more like a species threatened by an unsuspected common enemy that also stealthily threatens the existence of humankind. This mixture of types of Creatures, settings and circumstances makes for a good anthology. I gotta tell you my personal fave in this lineup is "Full Sun" by Brian W. Aldiss, followed a close second by "Mimic" by Donald A. Wollheim. Just a personal preference... So, my recommendation to the masses of sci-fi fans in general is, if you can find a copy, give it a whirl. It just might end up on your top shelf too.

Not as good as we remember.
3 of 3 found this helpful I recall back in the 1960s when my parents had a Bostitch Mini Stapler. It was small, red, cute and it did its job faithfully. It served well for years on end. Fast-forward some decades, and I was delighted to see it's still available for a reasonable price (if you shop carefully) on eBay. I ordered it in red (got a pink one) and tried using it several times to staple two sheets of paper together. The results were disastrous. It couldn't even penetrate the 2 paper layers fully, and the staples (supplied with it) bent every time. In utter disgust, I threw it and its supply of 1,000 worthless staples in the trashcan and never looked back. This is just another worthless made-in-China piece of junk that is a poor substitute for its lookalike made-in-USA predecessor.

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS - THE CAPTAIN AND ME : The best Doobies there is
1 of 1 found this helpful THE CAPTAIN AND ME is arguably the finest Doobie Brothers album of all time. It contains two of their most emblematic hit songs "China Grove" and "Long Train Runnin'". You simply cannot hear the opening bars of China Grove and not think Doobie Brothers right away. To my tastes, this album is their strongest in the areas of well-written songs lyrically and musically, great performance and it all just comes together as a suite of unforgettable music. There is no track on this album that is a throw-away. They're all great in their own right. This album is a timeless treasure and the group's signature classic. If you like the pre-Michael McDonald sound of the Doobie Brothers, this album is a must-have.
