Detailed Comparison of Sansa Fuze to iPod Nano. Spoiler Alert: Fuze Wins!!!
22 of 23 found this helpful If you are considering purchasing the Sansa Fuze MP3 player than most likely you are comparing it with an iPod Nano. In this review, I will compare the Sansa Fuze (which I own) To the iPod Nano 4G, 5G and 6G. I own an iPod Nano 4G. I have used a 5G enough to be familiar with it. I provide comparison to 6G based on specification only.
Transferring songs:
The Fuze is great because you can plug it in like a flash drive and transfer music to it. You do not need software to copy songs to it. You are not stuck with only transferring songs from one computer (like with the iPod). You can browse the songs by ID3 tags or by folders.
Winner: Fuze, by far.
Features:
The Fuze has a built-in FM radio and you can digitally record the radio while listening to it. It supports obscure Slotradio format cards that let you buy 1000 songs for about $40 legally with restrictions. You can watch videos and view photos on it's small screen. It has a built-in voice recorder. The Nano 4G has video and photo viewing, no voice recorder or FM radio. Those features, plus a video camera, speaker, built-in pedometer (with Nike+) were added in the 5G. Both the 4G & 5G Nano have better screens than the Sansa Fuze. The iPod Nano 6G loses the voice recorder, speaker, video camera and video playback functionality but still retains the pedometer & FM radio. No Nanos support recording from the FM radio, which the Fuze supports.
Winner: Nano 5G, then Fuze, then Nano 4G with 6G last in place.
Navigation:
The Fuze has a similiar scroll wheel as the iPod Nano 4G and 5G, however, with the Nano scroll wheel, you don't actually move the wheel, you just rub your finger over it. The Fuze's wheel actually rotates and has little grooves you can feel as you 'click' over them. This provided superior tactile feedback & response. The iPod 6G uses a touch screen, which provides no tactile feedback at all.
Winner: Fuze, barely.
Memory Expansion:
It supports MicroSDHC cards which means it can go up to 40GB using a 32GB card. None of the iPods have support for memory expansion.
Winner: Fuze, by far.
Supported Audio Formats:
The Fuze supports Audible formats (.AA), FLAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, WMA, and secure WMA.) The iPod natively supports AAC, protected AAC, Aiff, WAV and MP3 formats. The Fuze works with Rhapsody and the Nanos work with the iTunes store.
Winner: Fuze, barely.
Battery Life:
The battery life on my unit is good, but I still need to charge it a couple times a week with heavy use. This may have something to do with the fact that I bought it refurbished. The battery on this model is not easily removable, but neither is any iPod battery. My iPod Nano 4G requires charging just about as often, but I think it has a slight edge here.
Winner: Nano, barely.
Sound Quality:
The sound quality is very good for both the Sansa Fuze and iPod Nanos. Both Fuzes and Nanos include EQs and neither provides DSP effects. However, The Sansa Fuze provides slightly less distortion at maximum volume.
Winner: Fuze, barely.
Accessories:
The ipod has thousands of high-quality accessories to choose from, unlike the Sansa Fuze, which like most non-ipod Mp3 players, has barely any proprietary accessories for it. However, you obviously can connect it to any thing that accepts a standard 3.5mm jack, as you could using an iPod as well.
Winner: Nano, by far.
Value:
The 8GB Fuze is much less expensive than any 8GB iPod Nano.
Winner: Fuze, by far.
Overall: Fuze Wins, by Far!

Designed to fail
2 of 2 found this helpful Micro-USB port lasted ONE DAY before it broke off, rendering the keyboard MIDI-less, meaning I can't use it with the Chordana learning software or Synthesia on my computer, which was the entire point of buying it. Why couldn't they use at least a full size USB A port?
