Good little primer for amateurs, or people who have never played the game.
For a novice 42 player, this is a valuable introduction to the basic game, and competently explains bidding, strategy, and a few insights into the history of the game.
For one who learned the game at his parent's, grandparent's, great grandparents, and various Aunts, Uncles, and friends of the family's knee, before he learned the multiplication table, it is rather bland. The author of this little treatise has a rather condescending view of several variations of the game, revealing that he is a "purist", or in my opinion, "snob" 42 player who has no interest in the variations and no interest in promoting a faster and probably more interesting game than his old, hidebound, "nothing but the basics" style of 42. Possibly he is not intellectually equipped to accept variations from the "basics."
All in all, a good introduction for the novice 42 player, who needs to know the basics of tricks, game, and trumps, but slightly boring and off putting to a person who enjoys every variation and knows the strategy involved with each from the time the first trick is laid.
