The State of the Tenor-Joe Henderson
A very good piece of work by one of the great voices of the tenor saxophone. This album, or should I say c/d, was purchased to have in my car. I have the two original 12" albums in my collection and as the title states, this was and is the state of the tenor (saxophone)during the mid 1990's. I knew Joe Henderson personally in addition to being an admirer of his huge talent and his gifted artistry. Their are other albums by Joe that I have enjoyed more, such as his "Inner Urge" and "Mode for Joe"(both on Blue Note) and his "Joe Henderson in Japan"(on Riverside)immediately come to mind and would get my "Excellent rating". Joe's work with the equally gifted and great trumpter Woody Shaw, has always been a treat for one to experience wheather it be live or on record (a must have to demostrate this point is Larry Young's "Unity" album which is also on Blue Note, but this offering will not disappoint most listener at all. Being a musician myself I will not give my critque of any of the pieces on this album because I can not restrain myself from talking techincal inside stuff. I will say however that this will be a very good addition to your collection. In closing I would say get this good offering from an original or, you can settle for one of his many far less talented imitators out there who will give you well, a far less imitation.

A Masterpiece from the Master, Oliver Nelson
I am a musician/composer whose two principal instruments are he saxophone and the clarinet and this is my number one favorite Oliver Nelson recording. In every since of the word its a masterpiece from a highly gifted musician who was without a doubt the premier composer/Orchestra-tor during the second half of the 20th century. I know that it is popular to throw around superlative terms these days in furthering hype of a product but in this case those superlatives really are more than fitting. Oliver Nelson use and mastery of harmony, rhythm and melody (the three elements that make up music) are vividly on display in every piece on this album/c.d. I will not make the mistakes that many musicians do when they are talking to non-musicians by going into he many technical aspects of what's going on in the music as each bar goes by because, quite frankly doing so would not enhance the experience of the recording for them but, to the contrary it would destroy it while at the same time proofing what a conceded puff shirt I am.
I purchased this recording in the c.d. form because I wanted to be able to play it in my car. I have the original recording on 33 1/3 vinyl that I purchased in the 1960's and, in the final analysis, that is the true testimony to its worth. Buy this masterpiece of a work and receive many years of enjoyment.
