Excellent book; fascinating and well-written
As new residents of Virginia we are, of course, steeped in history, the American Revolution and the Civil War, and one cannot avoid *reading* about our founders' amazing lives. The Marquis de Lafayette was a significant contributor to the American victory over Great Britain: fearless, genteel, and loyal. Yet with the exception of the American geographical areas named after him (there are 39, this author asserts, including Fayette MO and Fayetteville AR), Lafayette is barely mentioned in historical tours.
But after our Revolution he went back to France and was a brave leader in the French Revolution, was imprisoned in the dark days of the Terror, and lived out the remainder of his life always searching for civil liberties. In this he was way ahead of his American peers, as he was opposed to slavery and was appalled by America's involvement with it.
There are occasions when this book gets a bit sentimental, but that's the worst of it. I recommend this unreservedly.

Wonderful children's classic
This children's classic is a gentle tale about a duck family born and raised in Boston. The drawings--also by the author--harken back to a time when not every book was part of a larger marketing scheme--think Disney, Dora, and all the other commerce-driven products.
Instead, a children's book was intended to broaden young horizons, fire imaginations, and bring pleasure. In this, Make Way for Ducklings rates 5 stars.
