Two Options: Take It or Leave It
The best gift I ever gave myself was a 2nd remote for my TV/DVD so I could leave one by my bed & one by the computer. So when I got a new TV, I ordered a replacement remote for it. Westinghouse had already stopped making replacement remotes for TVs it was still selling! But I found one that claims to replace it online before the TV had even been delivered. It worked seamlessly for the TV. Then I decided to watch my first DVD. WHAT? No fast forward button? Either watch it all or skip chapters. It was a pain. So I looked at the TV instructions. The instructions weren't detailed & didn't use the wording on the remote buttons and the picture didn't look exactly like the remote. But there was supposed to be a fast forward button. Three buttons were missing at the bottom of the remote. I put both remotes side by side (see attached photo). I noticed that the one that came with the TV labelled the remote differently. Some of the keys are dual function but you can't tell that by the labels on the replacement remote. So I now know where the fast forward buttons are. I went back to searching online. The only replacement remote available is the same as the one I bought. So, is it better having a remote missing labeling or no remote? It is DEFINITELY better having the remote. In the comparison photo attached, the one with 3 extra buttons at the bottom is the one that came with the TV. The upper portions of the remotes are the same. The reason I answered the "Is it easy to program?" question as "No" is because it isn't a programmable remote. It works as soon as you add batteries (not included).

Not All Versions Are Created Equal
I might have given this a 5 star rating except for one thing -- it is riveted together. My understanding is that part of the attraction of the original toy is that it came with instructions so a child could take it apart and put it back together again and learn how things work in the process. This has tamper proof fasteners holding it together so I don't get to experience taking it apart and re-assembling it. The clear plastic is yellowing and that is a function of the materials of the time and the age of the item. There was a re-released version that would be more likely to have the box and instruction and assembly tool, but I don't know if the new version is also available in both the kind that can be assembled and the kind that is never meant to come apart.
