Holmes lies about Chandler and rambles on not about the subject of the book.
If you love a long story that does not relate for 145 pages to the subject of the book.
Do begin with Richard Holmes in his intro he writes about the book Marlborough as military commander by David G Chandler, I had just read it. Holmes incorrectly sums up Chandler's work incorrectly.
Reading Chandler's book a reader will understand all aspects of John Churchill's life.
Holmes spends 38 pages about the times . . . what does his opinion on painters have to do with Churchill! He spends the next chapter discussing everyone who was around when Churchill was born and maybe where he was born. So he mentions Churchill once. by 145 I decided this was a waste of time.

Innovative and energetic
There are still those who can be innovate while out there not way out there.
The idea of combining the concepts and sounds of Jimi Hendrix and like wise for the John Coltrane, the 60 - 64 Coltrane, works out Great. If you like to listen to people who are willing to try new concepts. If you want to same 'ol listen to ray-de-o.
